Bloody Beautiful Playbook Launch

Join us for a discussion led by affect lab designer Pedro Lobo about the Bloody Beautiful Playbook, published in 2025. The book is both a colourful invitation and a creative vision for a subject that (until recently) has received almost no airtime in the arts and culture scene: women’s health. In this discussion Pedro will cover some of the design decisions made in the making process, as well as the book’s weirdly temporal format and never-quite-finished personality. Presented in an open-binding format with space for user-generated content and spontaneous additions, no Playbook is the same.

Bloody Beautiful is a one-day creative festival by affect lab that explores the magical, messy and often-misunderstood worlds of menstruation and menopause. Expect bold talks, art, performances, technology and design that reimagines the future of women’s health. We’re not here to whisper about cycles—we’re here to reframe the conversation entirely.

Hot Flash Dance Clash

Hot Flash Dance Clash highlights the physical experiences of people with cycles and celebrate them in a way that allows them to shape their own narrative - through dance. For the past year we’ve been hacking the systems and sensors that track data of menstruating and menopausal bodies. Then we designed a dance competition around our hacking, inspired by hip hop and breakdancing battles.

Bloody Beautiful x Amsterdam Museum

In this unique collaboration between Bloody Beautiful and the Amsterdam Museum, we paid homage to some of the first Dutch women who documented and shared their experiences of menstruation. We delved into a rarely seen archive of letters, collected and preserved by feminist Elly Brink between 1970 and 1980, and later rediscovered by curator Debra Knoop.

Bleeding Into the Metaverse

Even in 2025, images of period blood and menstruating avatars are banned in metaverse environments. affect lab took this as an urgent call for digital inclusivity – to celebrate menstruating bodies in the metaverse – and Bleeding into the Metaverse was born. In March 2025, it was commissioned by Tai Kwun Contemporary for Artists’ Night (in partnership with Art Basel) in Hong Kong.
